The Comforting History of "Creature Comforts I & II"
Speaking of a Gift That Keeps on Giving...
Two of the chairs donated to the Hannah House chair auction
were painted by an artists' collaborative that includes staff
members from
Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center; the chairs were designed as a complementary
pair. As it turns out, this pair of one-of-a-kind paintings that use Adirondack Chairs
as their canvas will be providing comfort for birthing mothers on
multiple levels - not just raising money for Hannah House services
to adolescent parents and their babies, but also providing
comfort for birthing mothers at DHMC itself
(where, incidentally and because DHMC is a regional medical center,
many of the girls at Hannah House also go to give birth).
This lovely matched pair of
Adirondack chairs, "Creature Comforts I" (left) decorated with lupines
and "Creature
Comforts II" (right) decorated in an iris motif, were painted by
an artists' collaborative that includes staff from Dartmouth-
Hitchcock Medical Center. Auctioned separately, the chairs
brought $325 and $350 respectively and were bought back by
their own sponsors - for a very special purpose.
Each of the 21 Hannah House Chairs at the auction had a sponsor. In this instance,
"Creature Comforts I" was sponsored by DHMC's Certified Nurse Midwifery
Program and "Creature Comforts II" by physicians in DHMC's department
of obstetrics and gynecology. The sponsors of these two chairs bought the chairs
back in winning bids at the Hannah House auction - for the purpose
of placing them in a special garden at DHMC's Birthing Pavilion
where they can provide grace and comfort for the countless new moms
and their famlies who will get to enjoy them in the years to come.
Just think...A matched pair of chairs
- painted by a team that included artists
from DHMC and
- sponsored by Dartmouth-Hitchcock birthing
and obstetrical departments
- in an auction to benefit pregnant and parenting youth and
their babies at Hannah House, then
- bought back by the Dartmouth-Hitchcock departments who
sponsored their creation
- for placement in a special garden
in the Birthing Pavilion at DHMC
- for the comfort of birthing women
and their families.
Now, that's a symmetry to bring a smile to the heart!
